What each does to a shower
| Condition | What it affects | Design response |
|---|---|---|
| Calcium hardness | Glass, polished tile, chrome fittings | Treated glass, matte finishes, mid-tone grout |
| Iron content | Pale grout, sealers, light stone | Mid-tone grout, tested sealer, avoid the palest finishes |
| Both together | Everything, faster | Specify against the water test, not the showroom sample |
Maintenance that does not damage the shower
The most effective habit is a squeegee on the glass after use — it removes the water before the minerals are left behind. For periodic cleaning, use a product suited to the specific surfaces: acidic descalers work on porcelain and glass but will etch natural stone and can degrade some sealers. If your shower contains stone, that restriction is not optional.
