Bathroom Remodeling in Nampa, Idaho

Canyon County's largest city, with a big stock of 1950s-to-1970s homes where the original shower has never been touched.

Short answer

Nampa's shower work is driven by age rather than ambition. A large share of the city's housing dates from the 1950s through the 1970s, which means original steel tubs with tiled surrounds set directly on mortar or, worse, tile over drywall. These assemblies are typically at or past the end of their life, and the scope is almost always a full rebuild of the wet area rather than a refresh. Newer subdivisions on the north and east sides bring the same corner-tub-and-small-shower pattern found in Meridian.

Housing stock in Nampa

  • Pre-war and 1940s homes near downtown Nampa with small original bathrooms and shower plumbing added after the fact.
  • A substantial 1950s-to-1970s stock where the shower is a steel tub with a tiled or fibreglass surround, frequently on its original waterproofing.
  • 1990s and 2000s subdivisions on the north and east sides with the familiar corner tub and undersized shower pairing.
  • Newer construction near the Idaho Center and toward Happy Valley with adequate footprints and builder-grade wet areas.

What we build here

  • Tile set over drywall in a 1960s surround is the most common failure we open up in Nampa. There is no repair for it — the assembly comes out to the studs and is rebuilt with a real membrane.
  • Mid-century bathrooms here are small, so the highest-value moves are a well-placed niche, a compact bench or fold-down seat, and a clear glass panel instead of a curtain and a bulkhead.
  • Where the tub is the only one in the house, we discuss keeping it before converting. Resale considerations in this housing stock are a legitimate factor and we will not pretend otherwise.
  • Older Nampa framing is often irregular enough that wall correction before tile is a genuine part of the work, particularly with large-format tile.

Permits and jurisdiction

Permit thresholds, inspection sequences and contractor-registration requirements are set locally and change over time. We confirm current requirements with the authority having jurisdiction before work starts, and you should expect any shower contractor to tell you which office that is. In Nampa that is the City of Nampa building safety department.

Nampa's older housing is largely wood-framed over crawlspaces, which supports a recessed curbless entry. Post-2000 subdivision homes on the fringes are more often slab-on-grade, where a flush entry means either cutting the slab or raising the bathroom floor — we tell you which applies after looking, not before.

Nampa is supplied from municipal wells and the water is hard. On a rebuild we usually recommend replacing the shower supply lines and the mixing valve while the wall is open, since scale-related valve problems are common in this housing stock and the wall will not be open again.
