A shower has to be big enough to stand, turn and bend in without touching cold tile, and big enough to keep spray away from the entry. In practice that means roughly 32 by 60 inches as a workable minimum, around 42 by 60 before a bench stops feeling like an intrusion, and 48 inches of depth or more before a curbless entry manages overspray comfortably without a door.

Whether a curbless shower is possible depends on your floor structure, not your budget. Wood framing over a crawlspace or an accessible ceiling usually allows the shower floor to be recessed between the joists. Where neither is acceptable, a low-profile single-step threshold is the honest alternative.

Calcium scale marks glass and polished finishes; iron stains pale grout and some sealers. Both are specification problems, and both are far cheaper to design around than to clean around.
