Surfaces and how they age
| Surface | How it ages | Recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Matte / through-body porcelain | Very well; scale is not highlighted | Default choice for walls and floors |
| Polished porcelain and glass tile | Shows every water spot | Use as an accent, not a whole wall |
| Natural stone | Needs sealing; sensitive to acidic descalers | Beautiful, but commit to the maintenance |
| Untreated glass panels | Scales quickly and permanently | Specify a factory-applied treatment |
Grout choices
Modern high-performance cement grouts and epoxy grouts both resist staining far better than older sanded cement. Epoxy is harder to install and less forgiving, but it is genuinely worth considering on a shower floor. Whatever the type, the colour choice matters: a mid-tone grout hides both scale and the ordinary shadowing that every shower develops.
